The weather has been bad for the past few days and this is the first decent aurora I've seen in a little while- they happen all the time as you can probably guess, but it's a matter of timing. It seems like the best ones happen while I'm inside working or when I'm asleep- but sometimes I just happen to be there and have my camera. The green line coming out of ARO is the green laser for the NASA lidar we take care of- it's an instrument that uses a pulsed laser to measure changes in atmospheric density and particles up to about 11 km up. As long as there's a little bit of snow in the air, you can see the beam pretty clearly, like you can here.
