In 1995, I graduated from California State University San Marcos with a Bachelor's in Liberal Studies and a History Minor. The following year, I earned my teaching credential with an emphasis in Math, Science, and Technology. It was during this time that I started taking a strong interest in Science. Upon completing my credential year in 1996, I was hired at Empresa Elementary School in the Vista Unified School District to teach a third grade class. During my years at Empresa, I have also taught, first, fourth, and fifth grades. Vista Unified School District has provided me many opportunities to extend my knowledge both as a teacher and outside of the classroom. I have been involved with such programs as the PISCES Project, K-12 Alliance, RISSA Testing, and the CAESL Project. The campus of Empresa sits on a hill. We can see mountains to the north and east of us. Some days in the winter when the sky is clear, we are fortunate enough to see snowcapped mountains. If we look west of our campus, we can see the Pacific Ocean in the distance! The daytime temperature year round is fairly moderate, 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. We live in an area that is arid, so we don't accumulate much rain. Instead, we get plenty of sunshine! I live with my two dogs in a four bedroom house. My life will be changing soon since I'm getting married in July! San Diegans find many things to do here. Besides the beach activities, there are trails through the chaparral for hiking biking, and horseback riding. Plus we have many fine restaurants, theaters, and famous museums. San Diego has much to offer, and I feel fortunate to live here. I hope you enjoy reading along as I experience the Arctic through the eyes of a teacher, a scientist, and a San Diegan!

Casey, and returned to teaching 20 years ago, first in kindergarten, then in second grade and now in fifth grade at Lake Elementary School. My oldest son and his wife of 2 years are expecting to make me a grandma in May. In my "off" time, I participate in mission trips to Mexico and Africa. |
